ABOUT UA CREW

Founded in 1993, UA Crew is over 30 years established.
We are a club program in the fall and scholastic program in the spring.

UA Crew is the only scholastic rowing program in central Ohio, and is one of the top programs in the United States. Since its inception in 1993, UA Crew has been teaching central Ohio athletes about the benefits of crew, the responsibility of teamwork, and the joys of winning.

UA Crew consistently races to top finishes at such prestigious events as the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships, Midwest Junior Rowing Championships, Scholastic Rowing Association National Championships, and US Rowing Youth National Championships. Our athletes have also found post-graduate success at the collegiate and international levels.

It is in this spirit of team-building and competitive drive, combined with teaching a lifelong love of rowing, that makes UA Crew one of the premier rowing organizations in the country. Find out how you can get involved, as a student-athlete, parent or supporter of UA Crew.

THE BOATYARD

UA Crew water practices are held at the UA Crew boatyard. The boatyard is located at Griggs Reservoir on Rte 33/Riverside Drive.

From Lane Ave., turn right (north) onto Rte 33/Riverside Drive. Go past the Bob Evans, apartments, and disk golf course. Just past the disk golf course, on the left, look for the stone “Griggs Reservoir” sign, across from the Marathon station.

There is a narrow road at the north end of the parking area — start walking down that road (downhill). About halfway down, there will be a curved driveway on your right. Walk up the driveway to the fenced in equipment storage area — this is the UA Crew boatyard.

OUR ORGANIZATION

UA Crew is a fun, inclusive team sport that challenges the mind and body. We pride ourselves on being a supportive, family environment, where everyone gets involved and becomes part of "the crew". We are a club team in the fall and a scholastic team in the spring (through UAHS), but all 9th-12th graders that want to participate are welcome to come out for either or both seasons each eligible year.

"Novices" are anyone who has not rowed at least one year in the sport. "Varsity" are anyone who has rowed for one year or more. While everyone rows, individuals are placed in competitive boats based on their individual erg times (rowing machines) and are tested multiple times per season to determine boat placement.

UA Crew rows both 8+ (8 seats with a coxwain), and 4+ (4 seats with a coxwain) at most regattas. On occasion, a 2- boat will be raced.

The team travels to all regattas together by charter bus and gets to bond as a team and experience independence from their parents, under the watchful eyes of our volunteer chaperones. Parents are welcome to attend all regattas to cheer on the team and get to see beautiful parts of the region in all sorts of weather (rain, sleet, snow and sun!). All athletes are required to pass a swim test to partipate with UA Crew.  Swim tests are given at the beginning of each season or summer session.  Contact safetychair@uacrew.org for any questions.

As an organization, Upper Arlington Crew, Inc. (UA Crew, Inc.) is a not for profit Ohio corporation exempt from federal income tax as a 501(c)(3) organization. The organization is managed by its Trustees, Board and Coaches.
The purposes of the corporation are:

  • To provide athletes and coaches with the proper equipment and financial resources to field a competitive crew team;

  • To raise funds to cover capital expenditures and operational expenses;

  • To assist and provide support for the Upper Arlington High School crew program;

  • To own and maintain any assets acquired;

  • To be a part of and support local and national rowing organizations; and

  • To promote the Upper Arlington High School crew program in the community.

The corporation currently owns more than $350,000 in assets – boats, oars, launches, cox boxes, safety equipment, motors, etc. – and is more than a booster organization. Running the organization in a fiscally sound manner, acquiring and maintaining equipment and facilities, and planning for the future requires the active support and involvement of all rowers and parents. The responsibilities are many, but when everyone does at least a little, no one becomes overwhelmed. Without the support of the parents, there simply would be no crew team!
